On December the 2nd 2021 a raft of new Flight Operations regulation comes into force. The intent of the change is based around simplifying and aligning regulations that can often be diffuse and confusing depending on what kind of operation you run.

Whilst the intent is simple the regulatory minefield can be difficult to navigate – especially if you’re currently operating under one set of rules and overnight you need to transition to a whole new playing field. So, what is changing and what do you need to do?
In short there are:
Six new PARTs to the regulation,
One of these (PART 91) applies to everyone – new General Operating Rules,
PART 138 only applies if you intend to do aerial work (photography, external load etc.)
PART 119 applies to all AOC holders,
The other three parts (121, 133, 135) apply dependent on the type of aircraft/operation you have.
Some changes that will need addressing include but are not limited to:
Charter and RPT will now be under a single safety standard – therefore some operations will have to put in places new systems and processes to meet this standard,
Alternate aerodromes policy will have substantial changes – requiring procedural changes,
New training facility and device standards,
New equipment requirements (e.g. TAWS for some additional aircraft),
More flexibility around electronic documentation,
Numerous change and cohesion of general flight rules (e.g. fuelling, basic airmanship etc.)
